The Hollow-Backed Hypermobile Horse: Why He Braces Instead of Lifting (And What You're Missing If You Keep Pushing Forward)

He’s not being difficult. He’s not undertrained. He’s not lazy, and he does not need more leg. He’s bracing because lifting feels genuinely dangerous to his nervous system — and until you understand why, every tool you reach for is going to make it worse.

This is the hollow-backed hypermobile horse. And he is one of the most misunderstood horses in the barn.

What “Hollow” Actually Means in This Horse

A hollow back in a hypermobile horse is not the same thing as a hollow back in a stiff or poorly trained horse. That distinction matters enormously.

In a stiff horse, hollow often means disconnected — the horse is evading through the back because the rider hasn’t yet established throughness. The solution is usually more suppleness work, more forward, more lateral work to unlock the ribcage.

In a hypermobile horse, hollow means something different. He’s hollow because he’s bracing. His thoracolumbar spine lacks the passive stability to support movement, so his longissimus dorsi — the big muscle that runs alongside the spine — contracts and holds. It’s not a training evasion. It’s a load-bearing strategy. His body is doing the only thing it knows to keep the spine from collapsing under the rider’s weight.

The brace is not the problem. The brace is the solution his body found to a problem you haven’t addressed yet.

Why Forward Makes It Worse

The instinct when you feel a horse hollow and brace is to push him forward. More energy, more impulsion, ride him up to the contact. And for most horses, that instinct is correct.

For the hypermobile horse, it often backfires.

Here’s what happens when you push a hollow-backed hypermobile horse forward into more speed: the demand on the lumbar spine increases. His joints, which are already struggling to stabilize, now have to manage more force, more quickly. His nervous system reads that as threat. The brace intensifies. He may also invert his neck, fall onto his forehand, or begin slamming into the contact — all of which look like resistances and all of which are actually his body trying to find load-bearing support somewhere, anywhere, that isn’t his compromised back.

Pushing him forward into that is not training. It’s compression.

The Real Job: Stability Before Suppleness

With the hypermobile horse, the sequencing has to flip. Most training models assume stability is a given and build suppleness and strength on top of it. The hypermobile horse doesn’t have that foundation. His joints have too much passive range of motion and not enough active control. You have to build the stability first — and the way you build it is not by demanding more movement, but by changing the quality of the movement you’re already asking for.

This means:

Neutral spine work at the walk. Before you ask this horse to reach into a contact, before you ask him to bend or yield or do anything gymnastic, he needs to walk in a way that allows his back to move without bracing. That means a relaxed topline, a swinging walk, and a rider who is not clamping, not fixing the hand, and not driving. You are not trying to push him anywhere. You are trying to let him feel safe enough to unlock.

Slow, deliberate transitions. Not halt-walk-halt-walk as a correction or a wake-up call. Transitions ridden so thoughtfully that the horse begins to feel where his hind leg is before he moves it. This is proprioceptive training. You are building his awareness of his own body in space, which is the foundation of active stability.

Shoulder-in and leg yield ridden at the walk, not the trot. These lateral movements, when ridden slowly, teach the horse to load individual hind limbs in a controlled way. That loading is what begins to recruit the deep stabilizing muscles — multifidus, iliopsoas — that the hypermobile horse is not using. The goal is not a show-ring shoulder-in. The goal is a step at a time, deliberate, with your horse actually engaging rather than drifting sideways to escape pressure.

If your horse braces through his back and leans on the inside shoulder in this work — which is extremely common — the ride-along that walks through this exact sequence takes you through a 16-minute warmup using neutral spine walk and trot work, shoulder-in, leg yield, and transitions to begin to shift that pattern. It’s one of the most practical starting points I can offer for this specific problem.

What the Brace Looks Like Under Saddle

Riders often describe the hollow-backed hypermobile horse as “behind the leg” or “dead to the aids.” Sometimes they describe him as “heavy” or “leaning.” Occasionally, riders are convinced he’s lazy because he doesn’t respond to leg the way they expect.

What you’re actually feeling is a horse who has shut down afferent input — sensory feedback — to his own back. He’s not ignoring your leg because he doesn’t care. He’s not responding correctly because the neural pathway from your aid to his hind leg is running through a back that is locked down and not transmitting effectively.

Think of it this way: you’re sending a message through a phone line that’s been wrapped so tightly around itself that the signal can barely get through. You can shout louder — more leg, more spur, more whip — and the signal is still degraded. Or you can untangle the line.

Untangling the line is the work. And it is slow. It requires more patience than most riders are trained to have, because the progress is subtle and the timeline is long.

The Role of the Rider’s Seat

Here is the part that most people do not want to hear: the hollow-backed hypermobile horse is exquisitely sensitive to what the rider’s pelvis is doing.

A rider who sits in anterior pelvic tilt — who braces their lower back, who drives with their seat, who grips with the back of their thigh — is loading this horse’s lumbar spine in exactly the wrong way. The horse cannot lift what the rider is pushing down.

This is not a criticism. It is a mechanical reality. The horse’s thoracolumbar fascia responds to the rider’s seat like a sail responds to the wind. If the rider’s seat is driving, compressing, or blocking, the horse’s back will not lift. It cannot lift. The geometry doesn’t allow it.

What a neutral rider pelvis gives this horse is permission. Permission to begin using his back as a suspension system rather than a load-bearing column. That shift — from column to suspension — is what “lifting through the back” actually is. And it cannot happen from the top down. It has to come from the horse feeling safe enough at the base to let the middle move.

What Progress Actually Looks Like

Progress with this horse is not a dramatic softening in the first week. It is:

  • A walk that begins to swing through the back where it was previously choppy or tight
  • A horse who blows out through his nose without you doing anything to ask for it
  • A first step of shoulder-in where the hind leg actually loads instead of trailing
  • A trot transition where he doesn’t brace against the contact before he moves

These are small. They’re easy to miss if you’re looking for something bigger. But they’re real, and they compound.

The horse who braces because lifting feels dangerous is not a horse who can be pushed into safety. He has to be led there — one neutral walk step, one deliberate transition, one quiet halt at a time.

That means understanding his anatomy. It means understanding your own seat. And it means being willing to go slow enough that he can actually change — not just comply.
