You’re walking into the arena. Your horse is fine. The footing is good. Nothing is actually wrong. And your hands are shaking, your jaw is locked, and some part of your brain is absolutely convinced you are about to die. You know it’s irrational. Knowing doesn’t help. That gap — between what your rational mind knows and what your body is doing — is exactly what polyvagal theory explains.
I want to give you the version that actually works in a barn aisle, not the version that requires a neuroscience textbook.
Why “Just Relax” Is Neurologically Useless Advice
Before polyvagal theory, the dominant model for the nervous system was simple: you have a gas pedal (sympathetic nervous system — fight or flight) and a brake (parasympathetic — rest and digest). Stressed? Too much gas. Anxious in the saddle? Apply brake. Breathe. Calm down.
The problem is that this model doesn’t account for what actually happens to riders. It doesn’t explain why some of us freeze completely — go flat, stop breathing, lose all feel — instead of getting sharp and reactive. It doesn’t explain why talking yourself down sometimes works and sometimes makes it worse. And it doesn’t explain why two riders can have the exact same near-miss experience and one shakes it off in twenty minutes while the other is still managing the fallout three months later.
Dr. Stephen Porges developed polyvagal theory in the 1990s, and the short version is this: the autonomic nervous system has three states, not two. Understanding which state you’re in — and how to move between them — is the actual skill. “Just relax” is not a skill. It’s an instruction with no mechanism attached.
The Three States, Explained for Riders
1. Ventral Vagal: Regulated and Present
This is the state where learning happens. Your prefrontal cortex — the part of your brain that processes nuance, makes good decisions, and feels feel — is fully online. You can sense your horse. You can adjust. You can receive feedback from your trainer without your nervous system treating it as a threat.
Physiologically, this state is mediated by the myelinated vagus nerve — a newer evolutionary structure that connects to the heart, lungs, throat, and face. When it’s active, your heart rate variability is high (good), your voice is warm and regulated, your peripheral vision is wide, and you can hear the difference between a concerned tone and an urgent one.
What it feels like in the saddle: You feel the horse under you. You’re making micro-adjustments without thinking about them. If something goes sideways, you respond rather than react. Time feels normal.
2. Sympathetic: Mobilized for Threat
This is the fight-or-flight state most riders know by name, even if they don’t always recognize it in themselves. Heart rate spikes. Blood goes to your large muscle groups. Peripheral vision narrows. Your horse spooks, and before your conscious brain has processed anything, your legs have gripped, your hands have tightened, and you’ve probably made the situation worse.
This state is not a character flaw. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it evolved to do. The problem is that the threat-detection system that kept your ancestors alive on the savanna cannot easily distinguish between a genuine predator and a horse that looked sideways at a jump standard.
What it looks like in riders: Grip. Speed. Shallow breathing. Racing thoughts. The feeling that everything is happening too fast. Some riders go sharp and reactive here — over-riding, over-correcting. Others go tense and still — not frozen exactly, but locked down.
3. Dorsal Vagal: Shutdown
This is the one nobody talks about enough in the equestrian world, and it’s the one I see most often in riders who have had a significant fall or a prolonged period of difficult, scary riding.
The dorsal vagal state is an ancient, unmyelinated branch of the vagus nerve that mediates shutdown — the freeze, collapse, and dissociation response. It evolved as a last-ditch survival mechanism in mammals: if fight and flight won’t work, go still and play dead.
In riders, this doesn’t look like lying on the ground. It looks like going blank. Losing feel completely. Not being able to make yourself do the thing you know you should do. Arriving at the barn and not being able to get on, not for any clear reason, just an overwhelming sense of flatness or impossibility. It can look like depression. It can look like laziness. It is neither.
What it looks like in riders: Dissociation under saddle — feeling like you’re watching yourself ride from a distance. Inability to access feel. Going through the motions without being present. Deep reluctance that doesn’t respond to motivation or logic. Sometimes a literal physical heaviness or fatigue that doesn’t match your actual fitness level.
Why This Model Matters More Than “Breathing Exercises”
Here is the thing I keep coming back to with riders: you cannot think your way out of a subcortical state.
When you’re in sympathetic activation or dorsal shutdown, your prefrontal cortex has been partially taken offline by design. The nervous system has decided this is not the moment for nuanced reasoning. It has handed control to older, faster systems. Telling yourself to calm down is a prefrontal instruction directed at a part of the brain that is not currently in charge.
This is why the breathing techniques that work beautifully when you’re slightly anxious completely fail you when you’re truly flooded. Polyvagal theory gives you a map. The map tells you where you are. And where you are determines what intervention has a chance of working.
How to Use This Practically
Step one is state identification, not state change.
Before you try to do anything about your anxiety or your shutdown, you need to accurately identify which state you’re in. Sympathetic and dorsal vagal look nothing alike, but riders often treat them the same way. Trying to activate yourself out of dorsal shutdown the way you’d activate yourself out of sympathetic arousal usually makes things worse, not better.
Sympathetic: You feel something. Heart pounding, hands moving, thoughts racing. There is energy in the system, it’s just misdirected.
Dorsal: You feel nothing, or you feel heavy and flat. The energy isn’t misdirected — it’s gone offline entirely.
For sympathetic activation: The goal is to complete the stress cycle, not suppress it. Your body mobilized for action. Give it some version of action that signals the threat has passed. This is why shaking your hands out, taking a lap at rising trot, or doing a transitions exercise works better than stopping and forcing stillness. Movement that is purposeful and slightly demanding — not avoidant movement, but intentional work — helps the nervous system learn that mobilization was not necessary.
Exhalation is also more powerful than inhalation for downregulating sympathetic activation. A longer out-breath than in-breath (not a specific ratio, just longer out) activates the vagal brake. This works. It just works better when you’re at a four on the anxiety scale than when you’re at a nine.
For dorsal shutdown: Suppression is not the problem here, so you don’t need a calming strategy. You need to gently re-activate. Small, orienting movements work: slowly turning your head and scanning the arena, feeling the weight of your feet in the stirrups, noticing three specific things about your environment. Social engagement also pulls directly on the ventral vagal system — talking to your horse in a normal tone, talking to another person in the barn. Not about the fear. Just talking. The vibration of your own voice, the back-and-forth of a low-stakes conversation, sends a signal to the nervous system that the environment is safe enough for connection.
The goal is always ventral vagal, and the pathway is through the body, not the mind.
What This Means for Your Training Long-Term
The reason polyvagal theory matters for riders — not just as a crisis management tool but as a training philosophy — is that the nervous system learns through repetition of state, not through repetition of information.
You can read every book about riding through fear. You can understand intellectually that your horse was not trying to hurt you. You can know that the fence is well within your ability. And you can still have a nervous system that treats the arena as a threat environment, because the nervous system learned that pattern through experience, and it can only unlearn it the same way.
This means that low-stakes repetition in a regulated state is not optional for riders managing anxiety — it is the training. It means that pushing through when you’re flooded does not build confidence; it builds a more robust fear association. And it means that the boring, unsexy work of getting on in a calm state, doing something easy, and getting off before you hit your ceiling is not giving up. It is neurologically sound training.
Every time you access ventral vagal in the saddle — genuinely present, genuinely soft, genuinely responsive — you are building a different neural pathway. Over time, that pathway becomes the default. That is how this actually works.
